About the Mar de Nubes

The "Mar de Nubes" (Sea of Clouds) at sunset is one of the most spectacular natural phenomena that occurs in Tenerife, particularly at viewpoints like Mirador de Chipeque. This mesmerizing sight happens when cloud formations settle below the viewpoint during sunset, creating a stunning ocean of clouds illuminated by golden sunset light.

Why this predictor?

I've personally been a couple of times at the Mirador de Chipeque to observe the Mar de Nubes, but one time there were very few clouds and the other one there were so many clouds that there were no visibility on whatsoever, it was practically fog!
That's why I decided to take matters in my hand and develop something that allows people to know if it will be possible to see the Mar de Nubes before going to the Mirador de Chipeque and save yourself a trip long the mountain roads!

What makes sunset at Mirador de Chipeque so special?

Sunset is the optimal time to view the sea of clouds due to:

  • Temperature Inversion: As the day cools, temperature inversion becomes more pronounced, trapping clouds at lower elevations
  • Wind Patterns: Evening hours often bring calmer winds, allowing clouds to settle more uniformly
  • Light Quality: The golden hour light adds dramatic colors to the cloud formations
  • Enhanced Visibility: Air clarity often improves as the day cools

Prediction Factors

The predictor analyzes several key factors, specifically at sunset time:

  • Cloud base height relative to the Mirador de Chipeque's elevation (1800m)
  • Humidity levels and temperature at sunset
  • Wind speed and direction
  • Cloud cover percentage

For the best experience, I suggest you to arrive at least 30 minutes before the predicted sunset time to secure a good viewing spot and watch the landscape as the changing light transforms the sea of clouds.
